Homestay - what exactly does this mean?

Homestay means staying with a family in their home. It is also known as staying with a host family. You may have your own bedroom or you may share a bedroom with another person. Usually daily breakfast and an evening meal or snack will be provided for you and included in the price. You will NOT have the option of preparing and cooking your own meals. Other services may be included, such as laundry. You will share communal rooms such as the bathroom/shower room and toilet, and probably the lounge, with all the other occupants of the house or flat. Homestay accommodation is popular with foreign students when they first arrive in the U.K. This type of accommodation is usually organised by the language school which the student plans to attend.

The Advantages of Homestay -

1. The stress of searching independently for accommodation in an unfamiliar town or unfamiliar country is avoided.
2. Homestay provides and excellent opportunity for you to improve your English.

The Disadvantages of Homestay -

1. You will usually have very little personal freedom.
2. There will probably be rules regarding noise at night, use of the shower, etc.
3. You will be expected to eat meals at the same time as the family.
4. The standard of cooking is often poor.
5. The type of food on offer may be unfamiliar to you and not to your liking.
6. Homestay is usually more expensive than renting a room or renting a bedsit.
